    Washington is once again leading the nation in blueberry production! Blueberries are planted on more than 20,000 acres statewide. Washington also has one of longest blueberry seasons in the nation, usually around 5 months. 85% of blueberry harvested in Washington are organic, making it one of the largest growers of organic blueberries anywhere in the world.



    Blueberries have been proven to help keep a healthy gut along with reducing inflamation and increasing T-cell immune function. They have also been shown to help with brain protection for age-related memory deficits. USDA research shows that blueberries are rich in anti-oxidant phytonutrients, vitamin C, manganese and fiber.



    Along with being eaten fresh, blueberries can also be enjoyed in cooking and baking. They taste great in baked goods like muffins, pies, and tarts. Bluberries also can be added to pancakes, smoothies, salads, sauces, jams, syrups, ice pops and ice cream for a fun treat or used as a breakfast topper on yogurt, granola, or oatmeal.



    The freshest blueberries are those that are deep blue with no discoloration. They should smell fruity and sweet and should be eaten within a few days of purchase or frozen for future use. Look for signs in the grocery store that show the blueberries came from local Washington farms to guarantee the freshest flavor and quality.   • Blueberry Lovers Rejoice! Washington’s Blueberry Season is here! 06.25.18


    Washington State is leading the nation in blueberry production! In 2016 Washington’s blueberry crops yielded 120 million pounds and the large majority were certified organic. Currently, 75% of blueberries produced in Washington are organic. Blueberry plants in Washington State are some of the world’s highest-yielding; resulting in 20,000 to 25,000 pounds per acre at maturity, including organic farms. 


    Blueberries have earned the label “superfood” as they are an excellent source of anti-oxidants, vitamin C, and fiber. Research is being done on the heart-healthy qualities of blueberries like their cholesterol processing abilities. These healthy morsels are also versatile and can be added to many baked goods like muffins, pancakes, and pies. They also can be used fresh in smoothies, yogurt parfaits, salads, or even on top of oatmeal. Best of all you can freeze any fresh blueberries that won’t be eaten right away, and they make a delicious, cool treat on a hot summer day. 


    In Eastern Washington, harvesting is underway now. Harvesting west of the Cascades will start the second week of July and continue into October. All fresh blueberries are handpicked.



    With Washington’s lengthy growing season, this summer is the perfect time to incorporate blueberries into your daily diet. And eating locally grown produce is easy! Look for containers identifying blueberries as Washington-grown or check the hang tags in the produce section at your grocery store
