SEATTLE – The dough has been formed, fried, filled and glazed and the judges of Food Network Challenge: Donut Champions have spoken. Mighty-O Donuts emerged as the Challenge winner on the April 10 donut themed show. Four contestants competed for the title with judging from two rounds and over seven hours of competition. Mighty-O’s Sara Beth Russert took home the $10,000 purse and bragging rights.

Mighty-O Donuts is known for their use of natural, sustainable certified organic ingredients in every donut. Contestants on the show were invited from across the country and included: The Hole (Denver, CO), Blue Collar Joe’s (Daleville, VA), and two of Seattle’s most notable donut makers, Mighty-O Donuts and Top Pot Doughnuts.

The competition came in two rounds. In the first round each contestant was given ninety minutes to make a donut with a “mystery ingredient” and a donut of their own recipe. The second round allowed six hours to construct an animal themed donut show piece and also prepare three donut varieties: 1) traditional ring donut 2) filled donut and 3) anything goes “non-traditional shaped” donut.

    Round 1 donuts included:
    - The Hole: Grasshopper Donut and mystery ingredient Curry Leaves Donut
    - Mighty-O: French Toast Donut and mystery ingredient Oregano and Greek olive oil Donut
    - Blue Collar Joe’s: Mayan Gold Doughnut and mystery ingredient Ginger and Satay Doughnut
    - Top Pot: Pink Feather Boa Doughnut and mystery ingredient Achiote Doughnut

    Round 2 donuts included:
    - The Hole: Lemon Drop Donut, Cardamom Carrot Cake Donut, Salty Toffee Bites
    - Mighty-O: Cinnamon Sugar and Ginger Donut, Salted Chocolate Caramel Donut with chocolate ganache filling, Cherry Pecan Fritter
    - Blue Collar Joe’s: P³ with G Donut (pomegranate, pear, pistachio), Banana Pudding Donut, Balsamic Berry Basket
    - Top Pot: Glazed Ring Donut, Vanilla Custard Donut, Cinnamon Twist

The animal themed showpiece elicited a peacock (The Hole), Mini the Mighty el-o-phant (Mighty-O Donuts), Joe the Dog (Blue Collar Joe’s) and Die giräffritter (Top Pot Doughnuts).

Judging was based on presentation, creativity and taste with the best overall score going to Mighty-O’s Sara Russert. The Hole followed in second place, Top Pot took third and Blue Collar Joe’s received fourth place.

Challenge judges were: Pastry chef and owner of D Bar Desserts in Denver, Keegan Gerhard; owner of Doughnut Plant in New York, Mark Isreal; and wedding cake designer, hall of fame sugar artist and owner of Romantic Wedding Cakes in Tulsa Oklahoma, Kerry Vincent.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MIGHTY-O DONUTS ON FOOD NETWORK CHALLENGE APRIL 10

Seattle’s Only Organic Donut Bakery Competes on “Donut Champions” Episode

SEATTLE – From its small bakery situated in Seattle’s Wallingford neighborhood to the big stage of Food Network, Mighty-O Donuts announces its appearance on the highly popular and fast-paced Food Network Challenge: Donut Champions on Sunday, April 10 at 8 p.m. (ET/PT). Competing on behalf of Mighty-O Donuts is donut creator extraordinaire Sara Beth Russert.

The adrenaline rushing, spectator sport of reality food television has found its way to the world of donuts. Four of the nation’s best doughnut bakers compete in the first Challenge featuring this breakfast staple. In this two-round challenge, each competitor is pushed to build an original doughnut showpiece. The competitor with the most impressive structure at the end of the competition wins $10,000. The four competitors are: The Hole (Denver, CO), Blue Collar Joe’s (Daleville, VA), and two of Seattle’s most notable donut makers, Mighty-O Donuts and Top Pot Doughnuts.

As one of the first organic donut retailers in the country, and the only one in Seattle, Mighty-O Donuts fills a niche that will be put to the test against the other more conventional donut makers on the show. With half of the contestants coming from Seattle, Mighty-O Donuts and Top Pot Doughnuts, a “hometown showdown” becomes a natural second contest.

Mighty-O’s contender, Sara Beth Russert, brings a twelve year history of baking knowledge and affinity for organic ingredients to Mighty-O Donuts. She learned to bake at a vegan café in Costa Mesa, CA and her five years of baking at Mighty-O Donuts gives her a strong background to compete on the show. When owner Ryan Kellner received the invitation to appear on Food Network Challenge: Donut Champions, Sara Beth was his natural choice.

Ahead of the curve, Mighty-O first started offering organic donuts in 2000. It has grown into a popular retail bakery that also provides wholesale donuts for cafes and stores in the Seattle area, as well as in select states through Whole Foods.
