Maria Hines Receives Honorary Award 11.12.13
A force to be reckoned with, Maria Hines, chef and owner of restaurants, Tilth, Golden Beetle and Agrodolce, is an honoree of the Puget Sound Business Journal’s (PSBJ) Women of Influence award. The Women of Influence award program recognizes “pioneers who had to shatter glass ceilings, knock down doors, create their own paths and help others along the way.”
Featured in the Huffington Post and Civil Eats, Hines takes an active role both in and outside the kitchen. Recognizing the importance of organic and sustainable food, all three of Hines’ restaurants are certified organic by Oregon Tilth, one of the toughest and best organic certifiers in the country. Joining culinary organizations such as the James Beard Foundation (JBF) and Pew Charitable Trusts, she teams up with fellow chefs in creating a safer, healthier and more sustainable food system. Seeing that everyone in the world has a right to enjoy healthy, sustainable food, the James Beard Award-winner won’t stop until that happens.
Most recently, Hines was asked by the James Beard Foundation to prepare a special menu for the 2013 JBF Leadership Awards, a corresponding event to the annual JBF Food Conference in New York City on Oct. 21-22. The conference, strategically themed “The Paradox of Appetite: Hungering for Change,” centered on the consequences of an uncontrolled appetite, which creates several paradoxes that generates numerous challenges for modern society. For the Leadership Awards dinner, Hines put together a three-course menu where each dish represented a different facet of food policy, including issues involving genetically engineered food and local farms.
Interested in attending the 2013 Women of Influence award ceremony? Hines will be recognized among 15 other honorees and PSBJ will be hosting the event at Hyatt Regency Bellevue on Wednesday, Nov. 13, 5:30-9:30 p.m. Ticket purchases can be made online.

With the cold weather upon us, there is no better time to enjoy an authentic Chicago dining experience at Benito’s Chicago Eatery in Ballard. Chef and owner Benjamin Kulikowski brings Seattleites his hometown’s most famous dish: Chicago-style deep dish pizza. Layers upon layers of aged mozzarella cheese, fresh vegetables and quality meats are meticulously laid on top of a rich, pie-like pizza crust and baked in a deep pan. Thirty to forty-five minutes of bake time is worth every minute once you take a bite of their signature Benito’s Special with sausage, peppers, onions, pepperoni, mushrooms and organic tomato sauce. Other pizza options include cheese, pepperoni, sausage and spinach. Or customize your own deep dish with a variety of vegetables and meats.
Benito’s Chicago Eatery is hosting a fundraiser for the Ballard Food Bank from 5-10 p.m. on Tuesday, November 12. It’s the perfect opportunity to grab your friends and family and experience Chicago’s best exports for the first time or enjoy them again! Benito’s also offers a variety of sandwiches, hot pastas, fresh salads and homemade cannoli. Beer and wine are also available. Macklemore Class at Pure Barre! 04.12.13
Kisha Vaughan, one of Pure Barre’s inaugural and beloved instructors, is also a “Macklorette” aka dancer, for local rap team Macklemore & Ryan Lewis! Kisha has choreographed and performed in their music videos and live tours over the last three years and just performed with them on Conan O’Brien April 4.
Kisha and Pure Barre have planned a special one-night-only “Macklemore Pure Barre class” on Friday, April 19 at 5:30 and 6:45 p.m. at Pure Barre’s U-District location. Pure Barre has been a fan and advocate of the duo over the last few years and their recent rise to popularity has created so much buzz locally and nationally that Pure Barre wanted to create a special themed class for their hometown fans, taught by Kisha and dedicated to their upbeat music. The 55-minute class will feature Macklemore tunes old and new!
Class is $15 per person and guests are required to pre-register online or at the studio to claim their spot. And we suggest doing so now before they sell out!
